Curated by Beral Madra, director Prof. Dr. Ergin Çavuşoğlu's solo exhibition featuring 6 (six) videos and films was opened at İSTANBUL EVLIYAGİL DOLAPDERE Art Gallery on November 15. The movie BAŞKALIK (BALTHAZAR) was produced in 2011 near the village of Tekirdağ-Sağlamtaş in Turkey. İsmet Çavuşoğlu served as a 'line producer' in this film by director Ergin Çavuşoğlu. On the other hand, the film reinforces the effect of the 'brute reality and the stubbornness of fate' by making references to Robert Bresson's 'The Random Balthazar'. OTHERWISE thus intertwines two tales of the misfortune of children in the story, and uses the donkey as the protagonist of a suspenseful tale of morality and betrayal against nature's rural and rugged landscapes...
prof. Dr. Who is Ergin Çavuşoğlu?
Ergin Çavuşoğlu, who was born in Tirgoviste, Bulgaria in 1968, lives and works in London. Çavuşoğlu started his education at the National Fine Arts School “Iliya Petrov” in Sofia and continued at Marmara University in Istanbul. The artist completed his master's degree at Goldsmiths College in London, the capital of the United Kingdom, and his doctorate from the University of Portsmouth. Çavuşoğlu, who mostly produces video and sound installations, usually takes place in urban spaces where the private and public intersect. These areas, which the artist defines as "thresholds", function as a border between people and their environment. Ergin Çavuşoğlu's work titled "Paths of Desire / Tarot and Chess" deals with the universal qualities of human behavior and their relations with the past, present and future. The video, which the artist describes through the lens of literary expressions in Italo Calvino's The Castle of Intersecting Destinies (1973), turns into a multi-layered narrative with different elements borrowed from literature. The narrative conveyed in the video titled “Lines of Desire / Tarot and Chess” makes references to Shakespeare's works of Hamlet, Macbeth and King Lear as well as classics such as Faust and Oedipus.
