Interview: Asst. Prof. Ahmet Özel talked about his art life and education.

Istanbul Gelisim University, Graphic Design Department Asst. Prof. Ahmet Özel talked about his artistic life and education adventure. In his own words, Ahmet Özel, sharing his journey of discovering his passion and talent for art despite difficult beginnings, also emphasized that he maintains his commitment to art in Turkey's politically challenging times.

Childhood Years and Passion for Art
Born to a Caucasian immigrant family, Ahmet Özel came from Çanakkale, where they settled in Istanbul. Despite coming from a family not directly related to art, he started to make his drawings by showing interest in comics published in various magazines during his childhood. He states that he realized that art was an exciting activity during this period.
Journey to Art Education
Ahmet Özel states that while he was directed to receive art education, his family wanted him to study more in architecture or engineering. However, Ahmet Özel, whose talents were noticed in his high school years, took a step towards art with the education he received at Kabataş High School for Boys and the guidance of his teachers. In particular, the guidance of Orhan Alparslan, a man of letters and a graduate of the Paris Academy of Fine Arts, further strengthened his bond with art.
Academic Career and Mimar Sinan University
Ahmet Özel studied painting at the State Academy of Fine Arts (today's Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University) and graduated from the Painting Department in 1982. During this period, Özel continued his commitment to art during politically difficult times in Turkey, was at the center of art in academic life, and always kept production responsibility at the forefront.
