Assoc. Prof. Metin Kuş Evaluated the Subject of 'The Effects of the Global Epidemic on Art Education'

Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) Faculty of Fine Arts (GSF) Head of Graphic Design Department Assoc. Metin Kuş, while evaluating the effects of the global epidemic due to Covid-19 on art education, shared his comments about facing a new era in terms of art education during the pandemic process.

Due to the Covid-19 epidemic, which has affected the world, we are encountering new and different solutions in both social, economic and cultural fields. We observe that the whole world has to evaluate the pandemic as multidimensional and find new solutions to deal with the epidemic. It is possible to see the negative effects of the epidemic in every field. Within the scope of Covid-19 measures, new and protective measures have been taken in the field of education, as in all areas. Evaluating the Covid-19 global epidemic, which caused us to experience unfamiliar practices, in terms of art education, Assoc. Metin Kuş answered our questions on the subject.

What kind of updates have we encountered in Graphic Design education and the sector in parallel with the development of home office culture due to the pandemic?

Due to the current effects of the pandemic, it is possible to foresee that the types of working from home (home office) and working without being affiliated to an agency (freelance) will become widespread in graphic design fields. These working methods were also preferred by some designers before the pandemic. Communication technologies and digital developments made this possible before the pandemic, but these types of work became widespread when current developments made it almost mandatory to work from home. The fact that this expansion is on a global scale encouraged both designers and those who need design to research and meet on wider platforms. Habits do not change easily in the lives of individuals and societies. However, the fact that the more widespread use of today's communication technologies, which have been tried due to necessities and offer wider opportunities, and turning into habits and life routines, can now be considered as indicators that this process can turn into different paradigms than before the pandemic. made it mandatory.

We have witnessed and are witnessing that the physical conditions of education in universities have changed due to the global epidemic. In this context, what kind of solution suggestions do you think in order to create an environment for practical lessons?

In general, art education must be done face-to-face due to the nature of art itself. It is possible and not necessary for this situation to change in principle. However, digital communication opportunities, as a complement to this necessary face-to-face education, were a necessity that did not exist before in the artistic education process, which the student often needed while studying the work given in his own environment, and the opportunity to show his teacher the stage of his work online and receive criticism. Therefore, after the pandemic, applied lessons are held in workshops, which are the natural environment for these lessons, while in the post-lesson studies, the student will be able to convey the stage of his work to his teacher by using common communication opportunities and receive criticism, correction and guidance. This is now possible, and it spreads these practical lessons over a much wider time period, not just limited to lesson time. While this will provide the student with much more effective learning and time-efficient opportunities, it will also provide opportunities to reinforce what the teacher has told and to observe the student's development in extracurricular times.

In addition to the fact that many courses are being held online with the acceleration of the trend of making online courses, do you think that making the theories of the courses that meet the criteria online will allow more physical space and time to be allocated for practice, if face-to-face education is introduced?

It will also bring the opportunity to create wider study areas in the application areas of the schools. This seems to be an important opportunity for fine arts education. It can be seen as another important advantage that the students who can take the theoretical lessons online add the time they spend for round trips to the application time.

If we leave aside the negative effects of the pandemic in art education, what are your views on the elimination of concepts such as geography or physical distance in the global sense? What kind of innovations and contributions will the disappearance of the concept of physical distance provide to the field of education?

Art fields are the fields that can adapt to new situations and create new expression possibilities in critical transformation times of people and societies. This is also true for today. The fields of art and design naturally have a mission to create the most effective expressions of today's conditions. To train people who will operate in these fields, to realize the new possibilities of new conditions and to make use of these opportunities in the most efficient way for these purposes. For example, those who are in the field and can be useful to students
