Interior Architecture and Environment Department Research Assistant Merve Karadaban presented her master's thesis on April 5, 2022 at the "Individual and Space Course" conducted by Istanbul Commerce University Architecture and Design Faculty Architecture Department Lecturer Pınar Geçkili Karaman. In the Individual and Space Course is aimed that examining the interaction process between the individual and the space with different aspects and within the framework of the discipline of environmental psychology, examining the user factor in the design processes of spaces of different scales and functions, and learning general information and methods on the subjects of ensuring spatial quality that takes into account the expectations of the students.

Res. Asst. Merve Karadaban shared her feelings and thoughts as follows about her presentation on her master's thesis titled "Looking at Istanbul as a Hollow City: A Study on the Ambiguous Areas of the City", which she completed under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Fatma Erkök at the Architectural Design Master's Program at Istanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology:

"In my presentation on my thesis, 'Looking at Istanbul as a Hollow City: A Research on the Uncertain Areas of the City', which I completed under the consultancy of Fatma Erkök in 2020, I tried to express the information I tried to gather about the deindustrialization process and my effort to understand the transformation of Istanbul in the light of this information. The hole city is actually defined as the manifestation of a contradiction, an inconsistent development of the capitalist city. On the one hand, while the rural areas on the urban periphery are included in the city, on the other hand, the unforeseen dissolution of the lands in the city; In fact, we are talking about transforming into a rural appearance most of the time. In this sense, the stance of the urban area as if it were rural, the approach of the rural area towards the urban, without becoming ambiguous, transforming into each other, but still not turning into a city or a rural area; We're talking about in-between. While doing this study, I can say that instead of looking at whether these cracks are positive or negative, I tried to understand how these cracks occur. I hope that the information about 'urban growth, urbanization, transition from industrialization to deindustrialization and the ambiguous area', which I tried to find the answer to in my thesis process and which I conveyed in the course, was interesting for the students."

We congratulate Res. Asst. Merve Karadaban and wish her continued success.
