The studio course, coordinated by Asst. Prof. Dr. Sezen Savran Penpecioğlu, featured an
academic event on Thursday, March 13, 2025, between 14:30 and 15:30, during which Res.
Assist. Dr. Gökçe Uzgören delivered a presentation based on her doctoral dissertation titled:
“Housing Under the Grip of Platform Capitalism: Hyper-Commodification of Housing in the
Cihangir District Through Airbnb”. In her presentation, Res. Assist. Dr. Gökçe Uzgören
addressed the impacts of platform capitalism on urban space, discussing how short-term rental
platforms—particularly Airbnb—have triggered spatial and social transformation in Istanbul’s
Cihangir neighborhood. The talk explored this transformation within the framework of
housing hyper-commodification.
The event, which drew considerable attention from students and faculty members, fostered
critical discussions on current urban issues such as housing markets, accessibility, and spatial
segregation. Concluding with a Q&A session, the presentation provided students with an
interdisciplinary perspective and contributed significantly to the academic discourse within
the Planning Studio framework.
