Patent success from Asst. Prof. İbrahim Erol and Asst. Prof. Gökçe Uzgören!
Asst. Prof. İbrahim Erol and Asst. Prof. Gökçe Uzgören, faculty members of Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (ICM), were entitled to receive a patent registration for their study titled "Smart Floor Unit That Analyzes User Behavior and Provides Adaptive Feedback," which offers an innovative solution to smart city technologies and spatial experience. This successful study presents a visionary design approach aiming to improve interactive architecture and urban infrastructure systems.
The invention titled "Smart Floor Unit That Analyzes User Behavior and Provides Adaptive Feedback," developed by Asst. Prof. İbrahim Erol and Asst. Prof. Gökçe Uzgören, faculty members of Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (ICM), was entitled to receive a patent, becoming a concrete example of academic knowledge transforming into social, urban, and sectoral benefits.
An "Interactive" Touch to Public Spaces and Smart City Infrastructures
Today, rapidly increasing human circulation brings along the need for smart pedestrian routing, density analysis, and safe accessibility in crowded areas such as airports, subway stations, hospitals, and public squares. Based on the human- and technology-oriented solution production mission of the interior architecture and environmental design disciplines, this patented project aims to create smart floor systems that provide visual (RGB LED) and tactile (haptic vibration) feedback by sensing user steps with multi-point pressure sensors. Capable of generating its own energy through piezoelectric crystal plates, this equipped floor unit stands out as a functional, environmentally friendly, and aesthetic design innovation that directly contributes to safe evacuation, accessibility, and smart city applications.
Transformation of Academic Knowledge into Sectoral and Innovative Production
This patent success, where design, research, and innovation-oriented productions are encouraged, is an important indicator that not only theoretical knowledge but also applicable, registered, and innovative projects are being brought to life. Focusing on the relationship between human behavior and smart space/environmental technologies, this study supports our university's intellectual property and innovation vision while adding a valuable perspective to the sustainable, interactive, and smart city models of the future.
We congratulate Asst. Prof. İbrahim Erol and Asst. Prof. Gökçe Uzgören for this innovative contribution they have presented to the literature and applied fields by blending advanced technology with spatial texture through design, and wish them continued success in their academic, scientific, and sectoral studies.
