Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (ICM) 4th-year undergraduate student Şevval Göre, Lect. Dr. Esra Büyükemir Karagöz, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Gökçe Uzgören made a joint paper presentation at the 5th International Scientific Compilation Research Congress held online on March 1, 2026. At the event, which hosted interdisciplinary academic exchanges, the co-authored study titled "An Interface Between Inside and Outside: A Systematic Literature Review on Urban Interiors" was shared with the participants.
The phenomenon of urban interior space was addressed from an interdisciplinary perspective
In the presented paper, the phenomenon of urban interior space was systematically examined in terms of its historical development, underlying motivations for its emergence, and the potentials it offers for spatial design studies. Pointing out that urban interiors are not merely physical voids, the study revealed that these areas are strategic interfaces that ensure the continuity of urban circulation and reproduce social interaction at the interior scale.
Situated at the intersection of architecture, interior architecture, and urban design disciplines, the urban interior space was defined within the scope of the study as a hybrid structure that stretches the boundaries between public and private spaces. This qualitative research, conducted jointly by the academics and student of Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (ICM), aims to clarify the theoretical foundation of the concept by systematizing the fragmented literature dispersed across different disciplines and to provide a qualified reference source for future academic studies and design practices.
We congratulate our 4th-year student Şevval Göre, who actively participated in scientific research processes while continuing her undergraduate education, and our esteemed academics Asst. Prof. Dr. Gökçe Uzgören and Lect. Dr. Esra Büyükemir Karagöz, who provided her with academic guidance and co-produced this work during the process, and we wish them continued academic success.
