Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) Faculty of Fine Arts (GSF) Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Gökçe Uzgören's article titled “The Role of Neighborhood Markets in the Development of Sociability-Based Publicity in Urban Life” Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Faculty of Architecture Journal of Design + Theory March 2021 published in the issue.
The article was written by Gökçe Uzgören at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Urban Planning Doctorate Program in the Fall Semester of the 2019-2020 Academic Year. Dr. It is based on the field research she conducted for the "Dimensions of Publicity in Urban Life" course conducted by Ebru Firidin Özgür.
In the study, which aims to investigate the potential of traditional street markets as an alternative shopping place in the contemporary capitalist system in terms of developing sociality-based publicity in urban life, Gökçe Uzgören states that she uses the observation and semi-structured survey technique in the neighborhood market she has chosen as her study area, and adopts an inductive approach and adds:
“Traditional street markets, public spaces that are neglected in the daily practices of urban life, and the potentials of these spaces in the context of sociality-based publicity are not examined much in the literature. However, these places have an important place in terms of socialization in the urban daily life of Istanbulites. For this reason, I think it is important to include unique spatial patterns such as neighborhood markets, which have existed in Istanbul for many years, in urban and spatial studies.”
