Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (ICM) faculty member Asst. Prof. Dr. Gökçe Uzgören took part as a speaker at the 39th meeting of the Social Sciences Foundation (SAV) Theses on Turkey (TÜT) seminar series. At the seminar, the urban impacts of digitalization, the transformative power of platforms like Airbnb in the housing market, and the hyper-commodification process of housing were discussed.
Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (ICM) Asst. Prof. Dr. Gökçe Uzgören discussed current transformations in the housing market and the urban impacts of digitalization at the 39th meeting of the Theses on Turkey (TÜT) seminar series organized by the Social Sciences Foundation (SAV). At the event, which attracted the attention of academics and researchers, the new dimensions of the housing crisis in the digitalized world were opened to discussion.
The hyper-commodification of housing and the transformative power of Airbnb
In the seminar titled “Platform Capitalism, Airbnb and the Hyper-Commodification of Housing: Actors and Contradictions”, Asst. Prof. Dr. Gökçe Uzgören comprehensively analyzed the process of housing turning into an investment tool rather than a fundamental right to shelter through the platform economy. In the presentation focusing on the transformative power of digital platforms like Airbnb on urban space; property relations, displacement processes, and the structural contradictions created by this new economic model in cities were shared with the participants.
An enriched discussion environment with the contributions of expert names
The event, moderated by Ahmet Önder, turned into a rich discussion platform with the contributions of competent names in the field of social sciences. In the evaluation session held after the presentation; Prof. Dr. Binnur Öktem Ünsal, Prof. Dr. Fuat Ercan, Merve Karadaban Özen, and Umur Yedikardeş made significant contributions to the theoretical and practical framework of the thesis with their questions, suggestions, and criticisms. The seminar, which presented eye-opening perspectives on the conflict of platform capitalism with local dynamics, brought a contemporary point of view to urban studies.
