Asst. Prof. Dr. Gökçe Uzgören, an academic from Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, attended the "Housing Affordability and Right to Housing Workshop" held at the MMU Hızır Bey Çelebi Hall in collaboration with the Marmara Municipalities Union (MMU) and the University of Glasgow. The workshop, designed and moderated as part of the doctoral thesis research of Safiye Özge Subaşı, a doctoral researcher at the University of Glasgow, brought together academics, experts, and local government representatives.
Housing Crisis and Social Inequalities
At the event, the deepening housing crisis on the scale of Istanbul and the Marmara Region and the right to housing were addressed from a multidisciplinary perspective. In the sessions, increasing housing prices, access difficulties experienced in the rental housing market, and the spatial and social inequalities created by the habitability conditions of housing across the city were discussed in detail.
Vacant Housing Paradox and Alternative Models
In the session titled "Understanding Vacant Housing in the Global Housing Affordability Crisis," one of the prominent topics of the workshop, the paradox created by the vacant housing stock amidst Istanbul's housing crisis was examined through legal mechanisms and prepared vacant housing maps. Bringing vacant housing back into use, the effects of urban transformation on affordability, rent control, and community-based alternative models were evaluated.
Participating in the discussions held throughout the workshop, Asst. Prof. Dr. Gökçe Uzgören contributed to ensuring housing as a fundamental human right and developing sustainable, fair policy proposals that can be implemented at the local government level. The event was concluded by synthesizing concrete and applicable strategies for the region.
